Musing Mondays

What is the longest book you've ever read?  How long did it take you to read it?

Kari:  The longest book I've ever read is probably the Bible.  As a teen-ager I once read the whole Bible in a week.  (It was a dare and I doubt I learned anything from the experience except speed reading skills.)  I have read the Bible straight through one other time.  That time it took a few months.  Boo and I read or listen to the lectionary readings daily.  I think we'll hear or read most of the Bible over a three year cycle.
The second longest book I've ever read is War and Peace.  It took three years and I read it to help me sleep.  Do I remember anything about that book?  Nope, not a thing.  I still get sleepy when I think about it though.  I probably should reread it as it's a classic.

Boo:  The longest book I've ever read is the Bible or a dictionary.  I didn't finish the dictionary though.  I got to the Z's and couldn't read it anymore.  He had a stroke that rendered him legally blind.

Musing Mondays

Do you have a reading goal for the year, such as ___ books? Why or why not?

I do have reading goals, though this is the first year I've actually set goals in this area. My first goal is to choose a quality book about every two months and slowly meander through it. I tend to fly through books and miss really being challenged and changed. Right now, I'm slowly meandering through A Right to Be Merry. It's just a short book and very engaging. I have to stop myself and think, reflect on what I've read until it becomes a part of me.

My second reading goal concerns Boo. Before Boo's first stroke, he and I used to read several books a week---separately. Now, we listen to audio books or I read aloud. Engaging Boo's mind is essential or he'll vegetate. I guess exercising our minds is as important as exercising our bodies. While I don't have a set number of books as a goal, I do try to provide at least two hours of reading daily---and more if he's interested. Because I often have to replay or reread chapters for Boo to comprehend, I don't concern myself with quantity.
